One of the most universally known and used symbol in the world is the one that represents ‘peace’. Thought up in 1958, the dove and olive branch peace symbol can now be seen literally every where – on t-shirts, pants, cars, walls, and of course, on the jewelry people wear. The symbols has been used by International Organizations, civil right movements, politicians, activists, rock groups, and anyone who has something to do with ‘peace’.
The present peace symbol was actually designed by a British designer for a committee against nuclear war and was later adopted by nuclear disarmament and anti war movements. The symbol crossed the Atlantic and reaching the United States where it was first used in civil right movements then in the anti-war movements during the time of the Vietnam War. It slowly received broader popularity, especially among the youth of those days. It was also a timely symbol at an era where peace is one of the things most sought for by people all over the world. It is also universal in the sense that it actually doesn’t really contain symbols of a particular religious group and the desire for peace is something inherent in people all over the world, irrespective of race or religion.
